Shetland Life at Punch Tree Cabins

Meet Our Shetland Ponies: Mr. Darcy & Mr. Jim Jams 🐴

One of the things our guests love most about staying here isn’t just the peace and quiet—it’s the animals that make this place feel truly special.

We’re lucky to have two very adorable residents on site: Mr. Darcy and Mr. Jim Jams.

Mr. Darcy is our miniature Shetland, now 16 years old, and full of character. Alongside him is Mr. Jim Jams, our standard Shetland, aged 6, who brings plenty of playful energy. Between them, they’ve become a much-loved part of life here over the past three years.

They have their own wee stable, their feeding area, and their own space to call home—but you’ll often spot them out and about, quietly part of the scenery. Every now and then, you might even see a Shetland pony pop up near your cabin!

Guests are very welcome to say hello and even give them a gentle stroke (at your own risk), and if you fancy spending a bit more time with them, just ask. I’m always happy to come along, supervise, and share a few fun facts about these lovely animals.

Speaking of which—did you know that horses can actually hear your heartbeat before they even see you? They’re incredibly intuitive animals and often sense how you’re feeling before you do.

That said, we do have a couple of important rules to keep both you and the ponies safe:

  • Please don’t feed them—it can be dangerous, even if it seems harmless

  • Please don’t enter the field—they need their own space and routine

(After all, they wouldn’t wander into your cabin uninvited!)

From time to time, the boys head off to shows, but most of the time they’re right here, quietly adding to the charm of the place.

And they’re not the only ones. You might also spot roe deer, rabbits, or even our two dogs, Archie and Jake, who are very much part of the welcome committee.

Between the animals and the surrounding wildlife, the whole place has its own natural rhythm. The soundtrack? Birds singing, owls calling, and kestrels overhead.

It’s peaceful, it’s grounding, and there’s something about being around animals—whether you’re a horse lover or not—that helps you slow down and breathe a little easier.

We feel very lucky to have them here, and we think you will too.

What’s not to love?
